Have you ever heard the phrase "early detection saves lives"? Well, in dentistry, early detection can save your tooth. In the picture above (right side) you can see what looks to be a few very small cavities that have formed in a couple of teeth. However, looks can be deceiving. Even though the cavity may appear small on the surface, underneath the decay can progress quite rapidly. The decay removal can lead to large areas of your tooth structure being removed to keep the tooth healthy (left side of above image).
This is why it is so important to visit a dentist regularly for your cleanings and checkups because your dentist can catch cavities at their earliest stages which allows your dentist to repair your tooth with minimal tooth structure removal. The earlier a cavity is detected the smaller the filling and the less costly the treatment is. If cavities go for a long time unchecked it can lead to more expensive treatments such as crowns or root canal treatment. In the worst case scenario, you could lose your tooth!
