Why do I need scaling and root planing?

• Scaling and root planing is recommended for patients with active periodontal disease which is infection and inflammation of the gums and bone supporting teeth.

The Problem:

• Bacteria, plaque, and tartar get built up on the teeth
• Gum inflammation (gingivitis)
• Inflammation of tissue surrounding the tooth (periodontitis)
• Progressive bone loss
• Inflammation when left untreated leads to tooth mobility and eventual tooth loss

What is scaling and root planing?



• Scaling and root planing is a procedure involving the removal of dental plaque and calculus (scaling) and then smoothing (planing) of the exposed surfaces of the roots, removing cementum and dentin that is impregnated with calculus, toxins, or microorganisms, the agents that cause inflammation.
