In some scenarios when a tooth is lost it can be replaced in the socket and saved in your dentition if done in adequate time. Although additional treatment will be needed to keep the tooth long term you get to keep your original tooth and do not have to have an alternative replacement.

If you have a swelling due to an infection in a tooth, the sooner you get it diagnosed and treated the better the prognosis is to keep your tooth. Sometimes when infections develop and go untreated for lengthy periods of time the teeth associated with the infection cannot be saved due to the infection destroying the bone supporting the teeth.
