Oral Cancer Awareness Month
April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

Oral cancer affects nearly 54,000 people each year, and is roughly 3% of all cancers diagnosed annually. As a dentist, we do more than just take care of your teeth; we care for your overall oral health. At our office, oral cancer screenings are performed at your initial appointment and each routine appointment.
Oral cancers can develop on the tongue, the tissue lining the mouth and gums, the lips, and the roof and floor of the mouth. Signs and symptoms to be aware of regarding oral cancer include:
- A lip or mouth sore that doesn't heal
- A white or reddish patch on the inside of the mouth
- Loose teeth
- A growth or lump inside your mouth
- Mouth pain
- Difficult or painful swallowing
There are ways to reduce your risk and prevent oral cancer from developing including avoiding tobacco products, drinking alcohol in moderation, limiting sun exposure and wearing lip balm with sunscreen, eating a healthy diet, and visiting your dentist at least once a year for an oral examination.
Oral cancer, like other cancers, is easier to treat the sooner it is discovered. If you have any concerns with any lesion or pain in your mouth don't hesitate to give our office a call. We are here to help you and make sure your oral health is in tip-top shape.
